Writing my way home

Hello World!

Welcome to my website.

I’m stunned by how streamlined working with command line tools can be. I can design, run, and write content for this website and deploy it all in the terminal. My changes are rendered automatically in a web browser, there’s almost no friction to managing a blog. And absolutely no need for the mouse. Thanks hugo!

I switched to vim a few months ago and it has massively transformed how I interact with the computer. Suddenly the majority of actions become fluid, and common operations are committed to muscle memory after only a few repetitions. If you are a heavy computer user I can’t overstate how much better life becomes when the mouse is relegated to a backup tool.

  1. Less physical energy is expended. Arm position doesn’t change for the majority of operations.

  2. Less stress is placed up on the wrist due to a reduction in the pressing click motion, the primary cause of repetitive strain injury and carpal tunnel.

  3. Keyboard actions are more easily committed to muscle memory versus GUI because the keyboard provides a relatively static canvas compared to GUIs.

  4. The mental required to switch applications is reduced. The mind no longer has to remember where applications are located relative to each other or the visual position of necessary elements. With properly setup hotkeys each application is a few keystrokes away from being exactly where you need it, committed to memory, and invariant to change.

  5. Using the keyboard makes you feel really cool.

If you aren’t already primarily using the keyboard and you use a computer for more than 4 hours per day, I think it’s maybe the most impactful investment you can make. The initial learning curve is 1) overstated and 2) quickly becomes fun. As I write this I’m learning about how to spellcheck this document with only the keyboard. There’s a bit of a mental investment, but it will pay off with every future post on this website.

God willing there will be many more.
